NeedToBreathe's The Outsiders

I recently got the opportunity to speak to a member of the Needtobreathecrew at one of their shows. My first question cut right to the chase: “How’s the new record?” I pressed. Careful not to reveal much, he told me it was the best release of their career.  Perhaps a bit skeptical, I eagerly waited for this project to come to my mailbox, hoping that what he said could somehow prove true.
The South Carolina rock outfit Needtobreathe has always carried with them a growing following and the unique sound of epic anthems fused with Southern charm. With The Outsiders, brothers Bear and Bo Reinhart finally feel comfortable showing the world their Southern roots, and the result is incredibly rewarding.
First off you can tell that this band is no stranger to touring. Unlike some of today’s hottest hits, you can tell Needtobreathe’s songs were written to sing live, because many tracks’ choruses are intended to be shouted back to the band by their audience.  “Lay ’Em Down” was made in the vein of their past hit, “Washed By the Water.” Plunged deep into the gospel well, Bear sings about laying down your troubles before the Lord.
In “Let Us Love,” the band hails their debut, with an epic atmosphere playing background to the message of loving unconditionally: “Let us love / Like we were children / Make us feel / Like we’re still living / In a world I know is burning to the ground.”  In “Something Beautiful,” perhaps the most generic-sounding track on the record, Bear paints a picture of being consumed in the tides of God’s grace. Starting out with a peaceful string intro, “Garden” plays out as a prayer to God, asking that our hearts be dedicated to God in all things.
It’s wonderful to be a fan of a band that keeps upping the bar with each new release. The Outsiders is definitely a career best for the band that screams originality, and so far this year, it’s one of my favorite releases.
