Hills and Mountains

Jason
June 15, 2006

Hills and more spectacularly, mountains, represent the best and worse of our life desires! Looking up at these structures of unshakable grandeur, our desires become alive and seem to give us our very purpose of living. Failure doesn't seem possible. Then at other times, they seem to belittle us for daring to have such thoughts, much less excepting them to actually materialize!

Some mountains need to be moved---Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Other mountains need to be claimed---Joshua 14:12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said. Today, lets focus on claiming mountains.

Joshua 14:12 is speaking of Caleb and the desire he had for a spot in the Promised land. 40 years in the wilderness, had not lessened his desire for this mountain spot! He claimed it . . . and it WOULDN'T be a cake walk. Though it was promised to him, he had to fight for it! This mountain was an INCREDIBLE piece of land which was desirable to other tribes BUT they didn't want to work for it; they wanted it handed to them with little IF ANY effort! They were willing to settle for less while Caleb was willing to risk all for the best. Mountains are in themselves immovable objects but in the spirit of Caleb, that mountain and those who were on it, met an unstoppable force! That force, was a pure and holy desire, fueled by and unshakable faith.

This mountain though imposing, wasn't intimidating to Caleb. In it, he saw the promise of a life perpetual joy. Some desires are worth battling the mountain for. If you want what you never had, you've got to do what you've never done. You risk set back, loss of friends, family, ridicule, scorn, embarrassment, misunderstanding, betrayal and at times loneliness and being alone. BUT, if you claim it and subdue it with God's help, the rewards will more than make up for what you suffered to obtain them.

I have some mountains that are kicking my butt right now but I'm learning to fight back. The value of the prize in my eyes is soooooo incredibly worth it. I want my mountain desperately! Do you have a mountain worth claiming, worth fighting and worth suffering for? A verse from one of my ALL TIME favorite songs (Get Here) says---there are hills and mountains between us, always something to get over . . . --- Stay in prayer as you battle with it. May God help us all as we dare to dream, dare to claim, dare to live and dare to get over!
