September 11, 2006

When I had been safely reeled back to the boat, the other couple was eager to swap stories.

“Didn’t it seem like we were so tiny?”

They had been up only a half hour earlier, right before me.

“Yeah, it was almost like flying,” I responded. And it was—minus the terrifying realization that my legs were hanging unbound beneath me and all.

I hadn’t expected to feel so disconnected from the boat when I was in the air. Parasailing was awesome, until I lost sight of the crew. Then, I just had to trust that they knew what they were doing and could bring me back down safely.

Isaiah 55:9 reminds us,

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

I love reading this verse when worry, anxiety, or just uncertainty gets the best of me. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and consumed, but to a God who created the heavens and earth, no problem or circumstance is more than a tiny speck. Like during my parasailing adventure, just because we lose sight of the hands that are guiding us, it doesn’t mean that they’re not there.
