he was forgiving the sins of humanity, thousands of years before he allowed himself to be put to death. So what purpose did his death ultimately serve?

mmmm...this is a hard one. I think another reason he came was to be tested and tried like us --even more. To show humanity that there is a way to live apart from sin. And He needed to go through what we go through in order to be the best High priest we could ever have. {Heb 2:17,18}
