So I'm in a relationship with a guy who was my close friend for awhile. I never thought that we would end up going out, but over time our feelings grew and when he asked me out I said yes. Our relationship is great and I'm happy, but my parents don't know about us and I'm sure I should listen to them and wait until college to date. I don't want to break up with him and potentially mess up a relationship, but I'm compelled to obey my parents wishes (which I didn't do in the first place)... What should I do??

What do YOU think?

Marriage and Finance

Posted by Vivi on Feb 8 2010 5:24AM

My fiance is a literature evangelist and we hope to pursue marriage in December. I am still in college in my last year and currently have a low paying job. His job does not bring in a stable income and I'm worried but he insists that he is working for God and that I should have more faith and that God will provide for us. I know he will but I still don't want to go into a financially unstable marriage. Am I right for worrying or is it just a lack of faith?

I know that education is very important and trying to go to school and support a wife can be even more stressful. My son is in college and wanted to get married and we encouraged him and his future wife that it would be better to wait until they both had graduated. You don't need that added stress on your marriage just starting out together so my son decided to wait and I feel that now they can start off focusing on their life together and not the stress of trying to finish school and paying their bills.

I can tell you that money is one of the top areas of conflict in marriage, so you're smart to be thinking about your finances now. I have two points to make. The first is, I recently read a great book about the fact that God has given us reasoning power because He wants us to use it. Yes, it's important to have faith, but use your brains too! Second, I recommend that you do Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University program. Dave Ramsey is a Christian man who offers logical principles for handing your finances, particularly in marriage. After going through his book or after you attend a Financial Peace University program in your local area (many churches of all denominations are offering them these days--look up Dave Ramsey's Web site, which may also tell you where programs are being held), you and your fiance will have a better grasp on the realities of your finances. Then, of course, ask God what He would have you to do about your situation.
